幼い頃から歌手に憧れていた中森明菜。そのデビューのきっかけはオーディション番組「スター誕生！」であった。だが、二度の不合格。審査員の一人、声楽家の松田トシからこう言われた。

「あなた、歌は上手いけど顔がとっても子供っぽいから、無理ね。おとなの歌を歌うより、童謡でも歌ってたほうがいいんじゃない？」

すると明菜は、

「童謡を歌えと先生はおっしゃいますけど、『スタ誕』では童謡は受けつけてくれないんじゃないですか。」

と言い放った。抗議とも取れる明菜の言葉に会場はざわついた。常に自分に正直であった中森明菜。その姿勢はデビュー前からのものだった明菜は諦めなかった。三度目の挑戦。明菜は山口百恵の「夢先案内人」を歌い、番組始まって以来の最高得点392点で合格。決勝大会ではレコード会社やプロダクション11社から獲得の意向を示すプラカードが上がる。ついにデビューのチャンスを掴んだのである。この時中森明菜16歳。デビューが決まった明菜に所属事務所が森アスナという芸名を用意した。しかし明菜は本名でデビューすることにこだわった。自らのエッセイの中でその時の思いをこう綴っている。

「中森明菜で、私、やっていきたいんです。この名前、自分では気に入っているんです。自分で納得できないことはしたくないし人が決めた通りにやってそれでうまくいかなくなった時に「あの時私ほんとうはこう思ったんだけどね」なんて、あとからグチグチいったり思ったりするのはもっとイヤだもの。」

自分の意見を主張し、すべての責任を負う。明菜は既に普通のアイドルではなかった。そしてその姿勢を貫き通していく。1982年（昭和57年）5月1日「スローモーション」が発売され、明菜は歌手としてのスタートを切った。これはデビュー直後に TBS の番組に出演した時の映像。以来明菜は数多くの歌をお茶の間に届けた。

時代はアイドル全盛期。同期は、松本伊代、早見優、堀ちえみ、小泉今日子など強力なライバルが揃っていた。明菜はライバルたちから数ヶ月遅れてのデビューとなり話題性は高くはなかったがその存在感と歌唱力は際立っていた。中森明菜は第二弾「少女 A」 でイメージチェンジ。大ブレイクを果たす。そこには私たちが知らないドラマがあった。ライバルたちに遅れを取った明菜だが、どうしたら巻き返せるか。スタッフは戦略を練りデビュー作の「スローモーション」の清純路線から大胆にも趣が全く違うツッパリ路線に舵を切った。タイトルは「少女 A」 。作詞はコピーライターでもあった新人作詞家の売野雅勇。後にチェッカーズの「涙のリクエスト」などの多くのヒット曲を手がける売野だが、それまで明菜とは面識がなかった
売野：

ゼロ、ゼロ、インフォメーションゼロ。アイドルを書く。中森明菜さんっていう方でね「スローモーション」でデビューしたって、チラシ１枚です。
だからよく、明菜さんに取材して書いたとか、いろんなことを言われたんですけれども面識は当然ない」
そこでストックしておいたプールサイドで出会った男女の話をベースに、主人公の男から女に置き換えた。

売野：

（男が）16歳ぐらいの女の子を口説いている、プールサイドで、って話を書いたんだけど、それを女の子の目線で、カメラはそっち側から撮ったらどうなるんだろうなっていうことで女の人にして書いたんですね。

売野：

「いわゆる普通の17歳だわ」、これと「早熟なのはしかたないけど」。この辺りはすごくよく書けたなあと思ったんですね自分で。

そして「少女A」は一人歩きを始める。
Ｑ：

売野さんが書いた「少女Ａ」の世界が中森明菜と等身大だったということになるわけですね

Ａ：

等身大というのは失礼かもしれないんですけども僕は偶然かなり共鳴するようなところがあったと思います。それはそういうことをしたとかねそういう話じゃなくて、雰囲気や体質的に出ているような部分とか理解できる部分とか興味する部分とかで。拒否反応が大変だったっていうことは後から聞きました。ロックのビートで書いてますから、曲の感じとかアレンジの感じから言ってもまあ不良にしか感じないよね。そういうことを感じたんじゃないですか、彼女は。

明菜は、売野が自分を不良少女と思い込んで書いたと受け止め。絶対に歌いたくないと言ったのだ。だが、歌の世界であることを理解し主人公になりきり見事に歌い上げた。
さらに明菜は新たな戦略に出る。知名度を上げるため地方の放送局やレコード店、スーパーなどを精力的に回ったのだ。当時のレコード会社の宣伝担当だった富岡信夫さんは
富岡：

大変でしたね。それはもう、先頭を走る松本伊代さんを筆頭にその後小泉今日子さん、堀ちえみさん、早見優さん、最後にはジャニーズのシブがき隊が待ってる、と言うかそういう時代に中森明菜というのは入ってるから。位置的には５番手6番手、ある意味ビリに近い状態ではなかったのかと思います。でも勝てるのはやっぱ歌唱力なんだ。歌唱力ってことは演歌じゃないけどもあのみかん箱の上で歌っても聞かされるだけの世界を彼女は持っていた。それをプロモーションの柱にしようと思いました。それはまあ、演歌パターンなんですが。

今回、「少女A」のキャンペーンでステージに立つ明菜の貴重映像を入手。
「少女Ａ」発売日の前日、明菜は福岡市内のスーパーの屋上にいた。

こうした地道な活動が実り、「少女A」はヒットチャートを駆け上がった。40万枚のヒット。先行する同期のアイドル達と肩を並べた。そして昭和57年9月16日、中森明菜は悲願だった TBS のザ・ベストテンに初登場を果たす。これはその時の貴重映像。憧れだった生放送の歌番組。デビューから4カ月、テレビカメラの向こうに全国の人がいる。

17歳の飾らない素顔を見せた明菜は緊張していた。しかしマイクを握ると堂々たるパフォーマンスを披露。

さらにまもなくして明菜はザ・ベストテンで第1位に輝くことになる。中森明菜の3枚目のシングル、「セカンド・ラブ」。明菜はこの曲でザ・ベストテンの1位を初めて獲得。ザ・ベストテンはリクエストハガキ、レコードの売り上げ、ラジオ各局と有線放送のランキングの４つを軸に集計し、はじき出された数字に基づいて順位を付ける忖度なしの画期的な番組。そのザ・ベストテンでついに1位を獲得した明菜。これをきっかけにザ・ベストテンを常に賑わすことになる。「セカンド・ラブ」はデビュー曲「スローモーション」と同じ来生えつこ作詞、来生たかお作曲のバラード

トップアイドルとして走り始めた明菜。その才能をデビュー前から感じ取っていた人がいる。「スローモーション」などのジャケット写真を撮影した野村誠一である。野村は多くの女優や女性歌手を撮っていた売れっ子写真家。
野村：

最初はレコーディングスタジオで会ったのかな。歌い出しを聞いただけでも結構鳥肌が立った。この子、凄いって。声質とか歌が、その年齢でそんなうまいなんてちょっと信じられなかったから。この最初に会った印象とその歌のギャップってのが凄かった。だからもう全然違う。「えっ！この子なに！？」みたいな感じの違いでしたね。

さらに野村が衝撃を受けたのは
野村：

それまでのほとんどのタレントさんだとニコニコしたりしてるんですけど明菜ちゃんに関してはね、ニコニコするとか、言い方変だけど媚を売るみたいなそういうのはもう全くない子でしたね。

明菜に魅了された野村はすぐに自分が担当していた人気漫画雑誌の表紙に推薦した。
存在を知られていない新人を人気雑誌の表紙に起用する。異例のこと。
野村：

ヤングマガジンで当時モデルの選定というのも自分が任されていたので、明菜ちゃんと会った時に「すごい子がいるよ、すごい可愛いし、色っぽいし、若いし、こういう子珍しい。そのうえ歌もめちゃくちゃいいからこの子は良いってことでやったんですよね。

さらに表紙だけではなく野村が撮った写真を中心に特集ページも組まれた。
野村：

そしたら実際に編集部から電話かかってきて「すごいよ」って。ハガキが6,000通も届いたと。6,000通って今までそんなことないよという。普段は来ないと。

予想を超える反響に編集スタッフは驚いたという。明菜がブレイクする素地は十分だったのだ。アイドルとして着実に進化を遂げる明菜の楽曲には二つの路線があった。一つはデビュー曲「スローモーション」のように少女の心情を歌ったバラード路線、もう一つは「少女Ａ」のように主張をする主人公を歌うツッパリ路線。4枚目のシングル「1/2の神話」。この曲も「少女Ａ」から引き継がれたツッパリ路線の一つ。対照的な交互に向かう戦略は明菜の存在感を際立たせている。

これは「8時だヨ！全員集合」の生放送のステージ。CM中は客席からの声に笑顔で答える。本番が迫ると歌の世界に入る。「十戒」は、弱い男を戒める強い女性を描いたツッパリ路線の作品。

歌い終わればまた笑顔。これも明菜の魅力。この後は貴重映像ヨーロッパの旅を楽しむ素顔の明菜。そしてヒット曲「禁区」と明菜の表現力。中森明菜はTBSのバラエティ番組にも出演。そこには歌番組とは違う表情を見せる明菜がいた。

デビュー2年目はミュージックビデオの撮影のためヨーロッパへ。異国のロケに胸を弾ませた。サクレクール寺院はモンマルトルの丘にあるパリを代表する観光名所。ここからパリの街を一望できるのだが。街ではこんな出会いも。ローマではトレビの泉へ。後ろ向きにコインを投げ入れると願いが叶うという言い伝えがある。真実の口は古代ローマのマンホールの蓋。偽りの心を持つ者が手を入れると切られたり抜けなくなってしまうという伝説で知られる。さらにこのロケの間6枚目のシングル「禁区」のレコーディングも行われた。この「禁区」も「少女Ａ」の作詞を手掛けた売野雅勇の作品。売野は明菜の表現力を高く評価していた。
売野：

作詞家が書いた詞を、20倍ぐらいっていうか深いところまで表現する。それは掘り下げようとして掘り下げているんじゃなくて、歌うと全部出てきちゃうっていう。だから彼女が、すごいものを持っている人なんですね。

明菜の詞を書くとき、強いこだわりがあった。
売野：

人が言っていない、人が歌っていない歌を、ということを常に考えていた。それがたとえ、常識に対して非常識であったり反常識であっても構わない。むしろそれを狙っていこうと。

さらにタイトルにもこだわった。
売野：

タイトルがすべてだと思っているところもあって。「1/2の神話」というのはもともとは「不良1/2」という路線だったんで、「不良1/2」というタイトルを出したらなんかレコード会社の人が怒って、というかビビッて、「ここまで出せません」みたいな話になって。「禁区」ですけども、これはぼくが中国に行ったときにね、ぼくがコンサート中に抜け出して体育館を見て回っていた時に、壁にね、ホントに畳１枚に１文字、２枚で2文字、「禁区」って書いてあったんです。白い壁に。すごい恐怖感があるんです。それがインプットしてあって、いつかはどこかで使いたいなというふうに思ったんですね。

中国語で「禁区」は、ここに入ってはいけないという意味。
売野：

そうです。禁止区域、keep out ということですよね。そういう「許されない恋」という話ですから、このタイトルがいいんじゃないかと。

明菜の卓越した表現力。「禁区」は聴く者の心をさらにつかんだ。

中森明菜ザ・ベストテン秘蔵映像！
明菜は「少女Ａ」で TBS のザ・ベストテンに初めてランクイン。以来223回10位以内に入り「ベストテンの女王」と呼ばれた。視聴者は期待感をもって明菜の出演を待ち望んだが、その出演はスリリングでもあった。時には移動の途中でマイクを握った。
· 放送局の玄関に滑り込み！：愛知県でのコンサートを終えた明菜はすぐに東京に戻る必要がありさらに生放送のザ・ベストテンの出演もあった。そこで二つを同時にするためタクシーを利用し途中にある静岡放送に立ち寄った。そして玄関から生出演し歌った。（少女A） 歌い終わるとすぐに待機していた事務所の車に乗り、一路東京へ。滞在時間わずか5分余り。明菜のスケジュールは文字通り分刻みであった。
· 新幹線の車中で歌う！：明菜が新幹線で移動中ザ・ベストテンの放送が始まった。そこで姫路駅に停車したタイミングで中継が結ばれ、何と車中で歌ったのだ 。（十戒）
20歳を目前にした明菜はアイドルからの脱却を図る。目指すは本格的なアーティスト。
次なる曲は多くの話題作を手掛け自ら歌っていた井上陽水が明菜のために書いた「飾りじゃないのよ涙は」。衣装の多くは明菜のアイディア。パンツスタイルなど当時最先端のファッションを積極的に取り入れた。明菜のセンスは多くの女性ファンを魅了。ファッションリーダーとしても高い支持を得て いた。

昭和60年の大晦日中森明菜は最も権威のある歌謡祭、日本レコード大賞の会場にいた。いよいよ大賞の発表。プレゼンターは女優の美保純と、この年プロ野球で三冠王となった落合博満選手。
ついに勝ち取ったレコード大賞。人前ではめったに見せない涙があふれた。

頂点に立った明菜は、さらに表現者としてのこだわりを強くする。「DESIRE」 の作詞は明菜の憧れの山口百恵のヒット曲を数多く手がけた阿木燿子。強く美しい日本女性を描いている。この「DESIRE」はザ・ベストテンで33位から1位という番組始まって以来のジャンプアップを記録、視聴者を驚かせた。しかしそれ以上に注目を浴びたのは和と洋の融合ともいえる独創的な衣装。明菜が自ら作り出す歌の世界は関係者の度肝を抜いた。
明菜：初めにジャケットで着物を着ようと思い、着物が好きなんで、できれば衣装も着物に関したものできたらなと思って。
「DESIRE」。この歌には明菜のすべてが凝縮されていた。

「DESIRE」のディレクターだった藤倉克己さんは明菜のプロデュース力に衝撃を受けたと言う。
藤倉：

ぼくがイメージしてたテレビ出演と、歌を含めた表現、全然越えてまして、すごいと思いましたね。ビジュアルに関してすごい感性を持ってる子だったんで全体で表現するって言うんではもちろん一番大事な音も含めて、それを包むジャケットだったり全部ひっくるめてパッケージで一つの表現というふうに考えてたんですかね。そういう面ではだからすごいプロデューサーなんだと思いますよ。

そして昭和61年の日本レコード大賞。明菜は再び頂点に立つ。

「笑って」というところは一切笑顔なんか見せない。逆にそう言った瞬間に怒ったみたいな顔、凛としたところが出てきてその中に醸し出すものが本物だった。たぶんグラビアとか出るのが好きじゃないんだと思う。そのレコードを売らなきゃいけないためのプロモーションだっていうことは分かってるから仕方ないけど、これをやればレコードが売れるんだっていう意識はなかったんじゃないかな。それはね、絶対的に歌に自信がある。「私は何でこんなのやらなきゃいけないの」みたいな顔してるけど、ステージに立つと人間が変わる。

明菜を撮り続けた野村がベストショットという写真がある。
野村：

これはハワイのパイナップル畑で撮ったんだけど、こんな笑顔なんてたぶん俺の写真の中では無いと思うんですよ。どれを見てもみんな怒ってる。でも、この時は上機嫌だから、自分でパイナップルこんなやってる。こっちが要求しないポーズをやるって言うんだから自分の中で何かはまった時ってこうなんだ。歌のステージの時には本人はこんなイメージなんじゃないですか。

多くの人を魅了する明菜の感性はさらに磨きがかかっていた。

数多くのヒット曲を世に送り出した中森明菜。中には明菜の才能や生き方に魅せられた作家から送られた曲もある。「難破船」はシンガーソングライターとして多くのヒット曲を持つ加藤登紀子が作詞作曲し自ら歌っていた曲。
加藤：

この歌は私の20歳の時の失恋を歌った曲なんです。20歳の時の失恋っていうのは初めての挫折だから、ものすごいショックだった。私はその当時40を越して歌ってましたからね。あ、やっぱりこの歌の主人公は20代がいい、て思って、明菜さんに贈ったらどうかしらというふうに思い至ったんです。
私が決めたのはね、（明菜が）22歳の誕生日という日にテレビに出ていてみんなにおめでとうとか言われるでしょ、「22なんて大嫌いです」と彼女が言ったんですね。それを聞いた時に、主人公に選んだ。みんなにおめでとうとか言われてるのに大嫌いですとか、ちゃんと言ってる明菜さんに凄く親近感を感じて、いいなぁって思ったんですね。

そこで加藤登紀子は「難破船」を歌ってもらおうと本人に直接自ら歌ったカセットテープを手渡した。
加藤：

カセットを渡したんですね。私、あなたにぴったりだと思うんだけども、もしあなたが歌うんだったら今私がステージでも歌ってるんだけどもあのそれをしばらくやめて明菜の歌としてこの歌を世に出してほしいと。
で、その数日後の地方のコンサートで別に何も言ってなかったし今みたいにネットもないんですけどお花が届きましたね。明菜さんから。一度だけです。それが多分「難破船」やりますって言う OK の返事なのかなっていうそんなやりとりがありました。

こうして明菜が歌う「難破船」はシングル盤として発売。歌番組で歌うその姿を見て加藤は鳥肌が立ったという。
加藤：

私以上にね、この歌に歌われている、深い海の底に沈んでいくような無力感とか絶望感みたいなものが伝わってくる音だなって。歌も本当にその一個ずつの音符を歌うことよりもその世界を歌おうとしてる明菜さんの気持ちが伝わってきました。その主人公であり続けたっていう存在としてね、すごい人だなぁと思いました。

明菜は「難破船」で日本レコード大賞特別大衆賞を受賞。情感豊かに歌い上げた。

彼女の背負った人生とかあるいは運命とかそういうちょっと神秘的なところまで全部がね、あの表面に出てきちゃう、声に出てきちゃう、顔に出てきちゃうっていうような稀に見る芸術家なんじゃないかと思いますね。だから、こういう歌手の方っていうのは本当に、20世紀21世紀になっても他にいない人だと思うんですよね。ご本人も自覚はしてるのかもしれないけれども明菜さんは明菜さんが思っている以上に偉大な歌手で、天才的で、本当に貴重な尊い歌手だという風には思いますね。

常に自分の考えや感性を信じ続けてきた中森明菜。デビュー40周年に際し決意とも思えるメッセージを発表している。
今年2022年は、デビューをさせていただいてから40年になります。デビュー40周年として、何らかの活動をと日々体調と向き合ってきておりましたが、まだ万全な体調とは言えません。
