The Namahage is a traditional folklore ritual from Akita Prefecture, especially around the Oga Peninsula in Japan. Dressed in straw garments and wearing demon-like masks, Namahage visit households on New Year's Eve to admonish laziness and ward off evil spirits. They’re famous for their phrase: "Are there any crying children?"
The name originates from the idea of removing "Namo-mi" (blisters caused by idleness near the hearth). Today, it’s a ceremony wishing for family safety and good fortune, recognized as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. You can even experience this unique tradition through local tourism events in Akita. Truly a fascinating slice of Japanese culture!
